Srinagar:Militants managed to escape after a brief exchange of fire with security forces in the Methan area of Srinagar in the wee hours of Saturday, officials said.

"At around 1 am on Saturday, a gunfight broke out between militants and security forces in Methan area of Chanapura in Srinagar. CRPF and a police team were present at the spot," a senior police officer told ETV Bharat. "The exchange of fire continued for some time but later there was complete silence. It seems that the militants have managed to flee by taking advantage of the darkness. However, the search operation in the area will continue," he added.

A cordon and search operation was launched in the area after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants there. As the joint team of police and army zeroed in on the spot, the hiding militants fired at the troopers triggering an encounter, police said earlier in the day.

On Friday, officials said a militant was killed while another managed to flee in an exchange of fire with the police in the Natipora area of Srinagar. "As per the ID card recovered from the slain terrorist, he has been identified as Aqib Bashir Kumar from Trenz Shopian, who was affiliated to the proscribed terror outfit LeT," the police said. The police team also recovered arms and ammunition from the site.
