Two police personnel dead, 12 injured in militant attack in Srinagar

Two policemen were killed and a dozen injured after the militants opened fire at the vehicle of the 9th battalion Indian Reserve Police (IRP) at Zewan area on Pantha Chowk-Khonmoh road on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha have condoled the demise of the security personnel.

Srinagar(J&K): Two Jammu and Kashmir police personnel died and 12 others were injured on Monday after militants attacked a bus of security forces near Aripora Zeewan in the outskirts of Srinagar, officials said.

Expressing anguish over the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha have condoled the demise of the security personnel.

Disclosing the details related to the attack, Kashmir Zone Police said, "#SrinagarTerrorAttack: Among the injured police personnel, 01 ASI & a Selection Grade Constable #succumbed to their injuries & attained #martyrdom. Further details shall follow.@JmuKmrPolice," in a tweet.

"Unidentified militants fired indiscriminately at the vehicle of 9th battalion Indian Reserve Police (IRP) at Zewan area on Pantha Chowk-Khonmoh road in which 14 policemen sustained injuries of which the condition of four is stated as critical," a senior police official told ETV Bharat.

“All the injured have been referred to the hospital for treatment. The area has been cordoned off and a massive search launched to nab the attackers," he added.

Earlier in the day, two unidentified militants were killed by security forces during a brief gunfight at Srinagar's Rangreth area.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir and sought details on the incident.

The Prime Minister's office tweeted, "PM @narendramodi has sought details on the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. He has also expressed condolences to the families of those security personnel who have been martyred in the attack."

"Strongly condemn the cowardly terrorist attack on J&K Police bus in Srinagar. My homage to our brave martyred police personnel. We are committed to ensure that perpetrators are punished. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families," Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha was quoted as saying by ANI.
