IED detected on Srinagar-Jammu highway diffused

The improvised explosive device was planted near the railway crossing in the Nowgam area. However, the bomb disposal squad later diffused the IED.

Srinagar (Jammu Kashmir):A major tragedy was averted on Monday when the security forces detected an improvised explosive device (IED) near the railway crossing in the Nowgam area of Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

Police said a patrolling party of the security forces detected the IED on the national highway.

A suspicious object was spotted by the Road Opening Party (RoP) of CRPF and police near Peaks Automobiles, barely a few hundred meters away from Nowgam Railway station after which experts and a bomb disposal squad was called to inspect the object.

"Movement of traffic was halted in the area. Bomb disposal squad later diffused the IED and traffic was allowed to resume.

The rail service between Banihal in the Jammu division and Baramulla in Kashmir division were resumed earlier in the day after remaining suspended for 11 months due to the pandemic.

Earlier on February 17, a major tragedy was averted with the timely detection of a suspected Improvised Explosive Device planted inside a pressure cooker on a busy highway in Rajouri.

The suspected IED was found on the roadside at Manjakote on Jammu-Poonch highway and was subsequently destroyed by the Army's Bomb Disposal Squad.

Similarly, on February 16, militants triggered an improvised explosive device to target a security forces vehicle in Anantnag.

The blast damaged a few civilian vehicles, but there was no loss of life reported.
