Rajasthan: Study to assess mental stress among tigers across country

The Rajasthan Forest Department expressing its concerns over the mental stress among big cats has decided to carry out a DNA test in order to deal with the issue.

Alwar (Rajasthan): Like humans, even wild animals are sometimes troubled by mental stress, studies say. In order to detect this the DNA samples of tigers have been taken from tiger reserves across the country, including Alwar.

Through this report, detailed information about the family of tigers will be made available and this would help assess the stress levels of tigers. Also, measures will be taken in consultation with experts to deal with the issue.

At present, there are 10 tigresses, 7 tigers and 6 cubs in Sariska Tiger Reserve located in the district.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) having carried out a study on felines observed several changes, which included mental stress. It was also seen that tigers have been hunting less than before. In view of the changes taking place in tigers, NTCA has collected the DNA samples of all the tigers in the country.

According to forest department officials, the DNA sample report will be out soon.
