Dharwad youths launch free auto-rickshaw service for women at night

In view of ensuring protection to women travelling at night, a few youths from Dharwad have launched 'Auto Raksha Foundation' to provide free auto-rickshaw service to such women. The service is available in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad post 10 pm.

Dharwad:In view of ensuring protection to women travelling at night, a few youths from Dharwad have launched 'Auto Raksha Foundation' to provide free auto-rickshaw service to such women. The service is available in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad post 10 pm.

"Any girl or woman, who cannot avail public transport post 10 pm, can contact us for a safe travel. The free service is also available for differently-abled, pregnant women, doctors, police and army personnel," a message on the rear of the auto-rickshaw reads. The youths also visit schools and colleges to teach students self-defence. They have also launched a website in the name of their foundation to further the cause.

Sunil, president of the Auto Raksha Foundation, said, "Every day, we witness cases of rape and sexual harassment on women, especially during the night. In this view, to ensure their protection, we have launched these services. On receiving a phone call, we immediately pick them up and drop them at their doorstep free of cost."

He said the youths pooled in their pocket money to purchase the auto-rickshaw and modify it.

"Safety is of utmost priority. When such a noble initiative has been launched, we, the women of Hubli-Dharwad, should make use of this service," said Nikitha, a student.
