Delhi: Cyclist dies after being hit by BMW with VIP plate, driver held

The deceased has been identified as Suvendu Chatterjee, 50, a resident of Gurugram. The police have not released the identity of the BMW driver.

New Delhi:A person riding a bicycle died after being hit by a BMW car in the Mahipalpur area of the national capital on Sunday. The accident took place on Sunday morning when the car, bearing a VIP number plate, hit the cyclist, leading to his death. The police said they have arrested the car's driver and have also started an investigation in the case.

The deceased has been identified as Suvendu Chatterjee, 50, a resident of Gurugram. The police have not released the identity of the BMW driver. The cyclist succumbed to injuries after he was hit by the BMW car in the Mahipalpur area of Vasant Kunj on the Delhi-Gurugram expressway.

A tyre of the BMW got burst following which the driver could not control the vehicle and hit the cyclist, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Manoj C was quoted saying by reports. Though the victim was rushed to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, doctors declared him brought dead.

A sticker on the white BMW car shows it belongs to the Chairman of the Finance Committee of Delhi Cantonment Board under the Ministry of Defence. The sticker reads 'Chairman Finance Committee Delhi Cantonment Board'.

The incident has created a heated online discussion with several people demanding strict action against the car driver. The number plate of the car shown in the pictures shared by the netizens is HR26 DK 0001.
