'Dead' man returns home to family's astonishment after three months

Family members of Sabu were astonished when he returned home alive, three months after his burial. Sabu, who took up jobs in eateries and hotels, was mistakenly declared dead in a road accident.

Pathanamthitta: A 35-year-old man, who was mistakenly declared dead, returned home to his family, three months after they thought they had buried him, much to the shock and delight of his kin. The man identified as Sakkayi alias Sabu, who often used to stay away from home for job purpose, was suspected to be dead after the body of a man was recovered in a road accident at Idappadi near Pala in Kottayam district last year.

In December last year, when Pala Police contacted other police stations in the State in order to identify the man who died in the accident, Thiruvananthapuram Police suspected that it was Sabu. Thiruvananthapuram police contacted Sabu's brother and his relatives on December 26. His family identified the body as Sabu's and buried it at Kudassanadu Saint Stephens Orthodox Church Cemetery on December 30.

Sabu, who used to do different jobs in the hotel with caterers and as a bus cleaner, used to come home only once in a while. He was also into petty thefts. Sabu was arrested by Thiruvananthapuram Police in November last year in connection with the case of stealing Rs 46000 from the hotel in Thiruvananthapuram where he used to work. Later, there was no news about him for a while.

Sabu has lost three teeth in the front. The dead body, which was buried mistakenly also had three missing teeth in the front, the reason why the family identified the body to be that of Sabu.

However, three months after the burial, Sabu’s friends found him and brought him back home. With Sabu’s return, the Police are currently investigating whose dead body was buried instead after the person died in an accident.

Last week, Muralidharan, a driver with the bus in which Sabu had worked as a cleaner spotted him. His friends and his brother Saji took Sabu to Pandalam Police station to report on his return. Municipal Councillor K Seena also reached the police station and identified the man.

With Sabu’s return, Pala police are investigating to identify the person who died in the accident in December. The tissue samples of the dead body’s inner organs were collected three months ago for the DNA test. The Police hope that they would be able to identify the deceased with the help of these DNA samples.
