3 ICG ships approaching West Bengal, Odisha coasts to do 'situational assessment'

New Delhi:Three ships of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) were approaching the coasts of West Bengal and Odisha to do "situational assessment" after Cyclone Yaas hit these shores on Wednesday morning, the Defence Ministry said.

Moreover, at the request of the West Bengal government, the ICG has deployed its disaster relief teams (DRT) at Digha and Contai for assistance, it said.

Six deer escape mangrove forest in Bengal amid cyclone

Kolkata: Six deer that strayed into residential areas from the Sundarbans, amid Cyclone 'Yaas', were rescued and sent back to their habitat by the forest department, a senior official said.

The herbivores might have panicked amid the rough weather conditions and escaped the mangrove forest, when the cyclone struck, Chief Wildlife Warden V K Yadav said

J'khand remains on high alert;over 10,000 people evacuated

Ranchi:Jharkhand remains on high alert and has evacuated over 10,000 people to safer zones while the operation is still on amid forecast that cyclone 'Yaas' would be hitting the state by midnight after pounding neighbouring Odisha and West Bengal, officials said Wednesday. 

The state has imposed complete lockdown in some parts to prevent people from venturing out in view of the prediction of the severe cyclonic storm battering the state.

Power supply affected in 14 Bengal districts due to Cyclone Yaas

Kolkata: People of 14 of the 23 districts of West Bengal faced electricity outage due to Cyclone Yaas and many sub-stations are under water following heavy rain induced by the storm on Wednesday, Power Minister Aroop Biswas said.

He said he sought a report from the power utilities of the state for loss assessment within 72 hours. 

"There is waist-level water in many locations. A number of sub-stations are now under water. Loss assessment will be available after ground surveys," Biswas said.

700 people in Bengal's East Midnapore rescued by Army

Kolkata: The Indian Army rescued around 700 people marooned at different places in West Bengal's East Midnapore district, which bore the brunt of cyclone 'Yaas', as large tracts of land in coastal areas of the state were inundated in a storm surge, a Defence official said.

Stranded people were also rescued from places submerged in the storm surge in South 24 Parganas and Howrah, he said.

SBI General Insurance to use drones to assess damage, settle claims quicker

Kolkata: SBI General Insurance on Wednesday said it will use drones to carry out surveys and assess the damage caused by cyclone 'Yaas' in parts of Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand in a bid to speed up the claim settlement process for its customers affected by the natural disaster.

The insurer has also set up a task force to manage queries and claims on a fast-track mode, a company official said.

Odisha CM announces 7 days' relief for 128 marooned villages

Bhubaneswar: With 128 villages across the coastal region of Odisha remaining inundated by Cyclone Yaas inducted tidal surge and rainwater, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday announced seven days' relief for the affected families.

He also directed officials to ensure that all major roads affected by the cyclone be repaired and 80 per cent of electricity supply in affected districts be restored within the next 24 hours.

The people of those 128 villages will be provided with cooked food or cooking materials and dry food for seven days. 

Local panchayat bodies and block level officials will make the arrangements for it, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Jena said.

Patnaik also asked officials to undertake health check-up of over 6.5 lakh people who were taken to cyclone shelters and test samples of suspected Covid-19 patients.

Trees uprooted, roads flooded; people living in darkness as Yaas batters Odisha

Balasore (Odisha) Trees and electric poles were uprooted, low-lying areas inundated while kutcha houses were badly damaged as Cyclone Yaas left a trail of destruction in Odisha's coastal districts of Balasore and Bhadrak on Wednesday.

Residents of several parts of the two districts, which bore the brunt of the 'very severe cyclonic storm', are staying without power since Tuesday night while many people have been evacuated to safer places by the government.

IMD suggests fishermen to not venture in sea

Bhubaneswar: Cyclone Yaas has completed the process of landfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on May 26, while advising fishermen not to venture to sea for the rest of the day.

“Cyclone Yaas has completed the process of landfall. Rainfall will continue till tomorrow. Fishermen are advised not to venture till tomorrow morning because the sea condition going to be rough," said Umashankar Das, Senior Scientist, IMD Bhubaneswar.  

The department has also predicted light to moderate rainfall at isolated places in West Bengal today while Jharkhand is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain today and tomorrow. 

People in the state were affected by rough weather conditions and high tide arising out of the storm.

Cyclone 'Yaas', packing winds of up to 130-145 kmph, whiplashed the country's eastern coasts on Wednesday, dumping heavy rain, damaging houses and farmlands, and leaving at least four persons dead - two in Odisha and two in Bengal -- officials said.

Thick sheets of rain blurred the vast coastline, as the cyclone made landfall around 9 am near Dhamra port in Odisha, with surging waters swamping the mud-and-thatch houses in the low-lying areas, where a massive evacuation drive has been undertaken to move more than 20 lakh people to safety.

The severe cyclonic storm Yaas will gradually weaken into a cyclonic storm during the next three hours, informed the India Meteorological Department on Wednesday.

"The severe cyclonic storm Yaas (pronounced as Yass) lay centered at 1530 hours IST of May 26, 2021, over northeast Odisha near latitude 21.65 degrees North and longitude 86.65 degrees East, about 30 kilometers West-Northwest of Balasore with a wind speed of 85-95 kilometers per hours gusting to 105 kilometers per hour and 30 kilometers South-Southwest of Baripada," the weather department informed. "It is likely to move Northwestwards and weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm during the next three hours," it added.

Rescue, clearing ops underway in cyclone Yaas-hit Odisha, West Bengal: NDRF

Rescue operations are underway in Odisha and West Bengal and teams are clearing a large number of uprooted electric poles and trees to keep roads open in these states which were hit by cyclone Yaas on Wednesday, a National Disaster Response Force official said.

The cyclone completed its landfall around noon packing strong winds and heavy rainfall along the Odisha coast and neighbouring areas of West Bengal.

Cyclone Yaas: No much damage to electrical infrastructure, says Odisha Special Relief Commissioner 

Bhubaneswar (Odisha):Odisha Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena on May 26 said that the cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’ has not created much damage to electrical infrastructure. 

However, a close watch has been kept on wind velocity and damage in Mayurbhanj. 

Pradeep Kumar Jena said, “As per latest report, they have already evacuated more than 1.05 lakh people and it's going on. We are keeping a close watch on wind velocity and damage in Mayurbhanj. We have seen large-scale uprooting of trees. The roads are being cleared continuously. There has not been much damage to electrical infrastructure in Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts. The restoration process started and electricity department also started safety checks of feeders. The adequate teams are available on field for road clearance and restoration.”

Tidal water flows into Haldia dock; assets safe

Kolkata: The cyclone Yaas has put the Kolkata port authorities on tenterhooks for some time as the rising water of the Hooghly river surpassed the height of the external lock gate of its Haldia Dock System, leading the draught level to go up to around eight metres on Wednesday, an official said.

However, water entered into the lock barrel the area between external and internal lock gates for not more than 30 minutes and no damage was done to ships or assets of the Haldia Dock system in Purba Medinipur district, port chairman Vinit Kumar said.

'Dedicated round-the-clock control rooms established,' says Eastern Railway GM

Kolkata: Informing about the preparations in view of Cyclone Yaas, Eastern Railway General Manager said that dedicated control rooms have been established as a precaution. 

"We've established dedicated round-the-clock control rooms. Sufficient storage of oxygen has been done for COVID patients. We've also positioned our diesel locomotives in case of overhead wiring failure," General Manager said.

Cyclone Yaas fury: Mumbai Airport cancels 6 flights 

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has cancelled a total of six flights to eastern India following the threats from Cyclone Yaas which is made landfall in Odisha at 9.15 a.m., an official said here on Wednesday.

These include cancellations of three incoming and three outgoing flights between Mumbai and Bhubaneshwar and Kolkata.

One crore people affected, three lakh houses damaged due to cyclone: Bengal CM

Kolkata:At least one crore people were affected and three lakh houses damaged in West Bengal due to the rough weather conditions arising out of cyclone 'Yaas', Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday.

One person died "accidentally" when he had gone out fishing, she said.

Cautioning people that high tide in seas, caused by the storm surge, would persist, Banerjee claimed that Bengal happens to be the "most-affected state".

Cyclone 'Yaas' made its landfall on Wednesday morning near Dhamra port in Odisha, at 130-140 kmph, gusting to 155 kmph, according to Doppler radar data.

The chief minister further said that as many as 15,04,506 people have been evacuated from the vulnerable areas in the state and moved to safer places.

"I will soon be undertaking an aerial survey of the affected areas in Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas districts," Banerjee said.

As of now, the government has a preliminary idea of the damage caused, from the reports provided by the district magistrates and other senior officials, the CM said.

"We will be conducting field surveys to get a final estimate... It will take us at least 72 hours to get a clearer idea," she added.

Balasore/Digha: The landfall process of very severe cyclonic storm Yaas began at 9 am today near the Dhamra port in Odisha's Bhadrak district.

The location of the landfall is north of Dhamra and south of Bahanaga, close to Bahanaga block, on the coast, around 50 km of Balasore, Odisha's Special Relief Commissioner PK Jena said.

The wind speed during landfall was at 130-140 kmph, gusting to 155 kmph, as per Doppler radar data. Around 5.80 lakh people have been shifted to safe shelters, he said.
