Cyclone Tauktae claims six lives in Maharashtra

The Maharashtra coastal area was severely hit. The cyclonic storm killed six people and injured nine. On Monday, there was wide devastation of vegetation and environment. At least 447 houses suffered damage.

Mumbai: 'Cyclone Tauktae', which originated in the Arabian Sea, is gradually moving towards Gujarat.

The Maharashtra coastal area was severely hit. The cyclonic storm killed six people and injured nine. On Monday, there was wide devastation of vegetation and environment. At least 447 houses suffered damage.

The storm caused heavy damage in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Trees collapsed in various places which in turn damaged houses. In Raigad, three people lost their lives due to the cyclone. Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray conducted an analysis of the situation and ordered the authorities concerned to start the relief and restoration work.

The cyclonic storm hit Mumbai on Monday. Due to the effects of the cyclone, Mumbai and other rural parts received heavy rainfall. Transportation was affected as water inundated roads and uprooted tree branches blocked railway tracks. As a precautionary measure, the Worli-Bandra Sea Link was closed for transportation after 10 am. It was decided to terminate all flights at Mumbai airport till 8 pm. On the other hand, patients from three COVID-19 centres in Mumbai were safely shifted to a safer place.

At 3:44 pm, there was a surge in sea waves along with cyclonic winds. The wind speed touched 114 kmph. Huge waves were witnessed at the Gateway of India, Nariman Point, Dadar Chowpatty and Juhu.

Damage to houses in Ratnagiri, the investigation started

Ratnagiri district bore heavy damage as several trees got uprooted due to gusty winds and heavy rain. They in turn damaged several houses. Although there were no casualties, a huge financial loss was estimated. Power supply in the district was cut off.

Two boats in Sindhudurg were washed away in the sea

Two boats docked at Anandwadi port in Devgad were washed away in the sea. A sailor lost his life while three others were rescued. A total of 144 families were evacuated from the coastal side.

Cyclonic storm kills three in Raigad district

In Raigad district, Tauktae killed three people and two animals. In addition, 1,886 houses were partially damaged while five houses were completely damaged. There were interruptions in treating COVID patients as power supply got disrupted.
