Cyclone Burevi barrels towards TN and Kerala

The Indian Meteorological Department says Cyclone Burevi in the Bay of Bengal is on course to hit Kerala and Tamil Nadu around Thursday.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in the southern part of Kerala on December 2. Intense rainfall is expected in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha districts.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority(KSDMA) informed that venturing into the sea from Kerala coast has been banned till further notice. Those who already ventured into the sea are directed to move to the nearest safe coast immediately.

According to the IMD, the ‘deep depression’ in the Bay of Bengal has formed into a cyclonic storm, ‘Burevi,’ and it is expected to hit the southern coasts of Tamil Nadu around December 3.

Thiruvananthapuram district, which is under the greatest threat from the cyclone storm, has already started its preparations to reduce the impact.

Thiruvananthapuram District Collector Navajyoth Khosa said that a control room has been set up and the assistance of the central forces including Army, Navy and Air force has been sought to handle any emergency during the cyclone storm in the district.

The Collector has also ordered to release as much water as possible from all the major dams in the district. Special attention is being given to 48 villages in the district.
