Guwahati: The Meghalaya government has imposed curfew in capital town Shillong and restricted the services of mobile internet following deterioration of law and order situation in certain areas of the state

A group of people Sunday night hurled a petrol bomb at the residence of Chief Minister COnrad Sangma and resorted to vandalism on the streets of Shillong. An agitated mob also destroyed the vehicle of a CRPF patrol and vandalised a vehicle bound for Guwahati

While curfew is in force in Shillong, mobile internet services have been suspended in four districts - East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi

The violence broke out after the recent killing of a surrendered militant during a police raid in the wee hours of Saturday. Police suspected the hands of surrendered HNLC militant Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew behind the recent IED blasts in Shillong and raided his house

Police said that during the raid, Thangkhiew attacked the police with a knife making the police retaliate and injure the surrendered militant. Thangkhiew was declared brought dead in the hospital. Thangkhiew's supporters described the killing as a "cold blooded murder" and resorted to protests.

"We have evidence that Thangkhiew was behind the IED blasts and wanted to arrest him. However, the unfortunate incident took place as the police had to fire at him," a senior police official said.

Meanwhile Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui resigned following the death of Thangkhiew to facilitate free and fair probe into his death.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has also assured that a judicial probe will be ordered into the circumstances leading to the death of Thangkhiew.

On the other hand, Assam police have issued an advisory to the people of the state not to visit Shillong and adjoining areas till there is improvement in the law and order situation.
