Congress slams Delhi govt on it's handling of COVID-19 situation

The Congress on Tuesday sought immediate steps to check the spread of coronavirus in the national capital and favoured a complete lockdown of markets, public transport and government offices, instead of a partial one. Congress senior spokesperson Ajay Maken said the COVID situation in the national capital is "very bad" as "one in every five persons" infected by COVID-19 is from Delhi.

New Delhi: Slamming Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government for COVID-19 situation in the national capital, Congress on Tuesday said that COVID situation in the national capital is "very bad" as "one in every five persons" infected by COVID-19 is from Delhi.

While briefing media in a virtual press conference, Congress General Secretary and senior spokesperson Ajay Maken sought immediate steps to check the spread of coronavirus in New Delhi and favoured a complete lockdown of markets, public transport and government offices, instead of a partial one.

He also stated that announcing partial lockdown would be "worst policy decision" in such a scenario.

"While the national average per million people who are COVID affected is 6,407, Delhi's average is 29,140, which is five times more than the national one. NCDC has already said that delivery touch 15,000 cases per day and we are nearing that. 20 per cent of such cases would require hospitalization which means every day 600 additional ICU beds would be needed," Maken said.

While commenting on lockdown, he stated, "My personal view is that all markets, offices should be closed immediately. It shouldn't be selectively done because if you do it selectively there will be more spread of coronavirus, which Delhi government and Central Government should think about."

He arrests the government to shut all offices and public transport in Delhi and promote work from home to prevent further spread of the virus.
The Congress leader also alleged that both Delhi government as well as Central Government are "playing games" instead of tackling the Covid-19 situation.

"Such a situation in Delhi and instead of handling it, Delhi government and Central Government both are playing games. Both are pushing onto each other the responsibility, whereas they should work collectively and increase the ICU beds which they haven't done," he added.
