Charanjit Singh Channi meets Governor, says oath ceremony on Monday morning

Punjab Chief Minister designate, Charanjit Singh Channi, belongs to the Ramdasia Sikh community. He has been an MLA from Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency for the third time. On 16 March 2017, he was included in the cabinet of Captain Amarinder Singh.

New Delhi:Punjab Chief Minister designate,Charanjit Singh Channi, belongs to the Ramdasia Sikh community. He has been an MLA from Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency for the third time. On 16 March 2017, he was included in the cabinet of Captain Amarinder Singh. Today, he met the Punjab Governor, Banwarilal Purohit,accompanied by state Congress party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. Later, interacting with the media, Channi said, "We have presented our stance, unanimously supported by party MLAs, before the Governor. Oath taking ceremony will take place at 11 am tomorrow".

Charanjit Singh Channi was born on 1 March 1963 and is a resident of Mohali Kharar. His mother's name is Late Ajmer Kaur and his father's name is Harsha Singh. He has done post graduation in Law and also a handball player. He has been a three-time university gold medalist in handball. He has also participated in social programs like NCC and NSS since his school days. Charanjit Singh Channi joined Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Chandigarh for higher education and later completed his post-graduation in Law from Panjab University

The political career of Charanjit Singh Channi

Channi has been MLA three times from Chamkaur Sahib constituency. He is a Sikh-Dalit leader and has been very close to Navjot Singh Sidhu, the current Congress state president. In 2007, he was elected as MLA for the first time from the Chamkaur Sahib. He was elected thrice to the Punjab Assembly from the same constituency. Channi also worked as the Leader of Opposition in 2015, where he played a major role during the Akali Dal government. In 2017, he became a cabinet minister for the first time, handling the portfolio of Technical Education and Industrial Training in Captain Amarinder Singh's cabinet.
