Cannot have elitist attitude by removing beggars: SC

The Supreme Court observed that begging is a socioeconomic problem, it is done out of poverty and they cannot have an 'elitist attitude' by removing them from public places.

New Delhi:The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Central government and Delhi government on a plea seeking beggars' vaccination and rehabilitation in the wake of Covid-19.

The apex court observed that begging is a socioeconomic problem, it is done out of poverty and they cannot have an "elitist attitude" by removing them from public places. The plea filed by Kush Kalra sought their removal from public places like traffic junctions.

The bench comprising of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice MR Shah directed the Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta to assist the court in the matter. The matter will be heard again in two weeks.
