Chhattisgarh: Pregnant woman delivers on river bank while being shifted to hospital in palanquin

A pregnant woman in Chhattishgarh was compelled to deliver on the banks of a river in absence of a motorboat.

Bijapur (Chhattisgarh):A woman gave birth to a baby girl on the banks of a swollen river in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh while she was being taken to the nearby health facility in a makeshift palanquin in the absence of an ambulance.

Hailing from Jhorgaya village under Gangaloor tehsil in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, Sarita Gondi had labour pains while she was being taken to a primary health centre. However, the lack of a boat, as well as an ambulance, halted the effort. A rescue team was sent to the spot when Bijapur Tehsildar and CEO Janpad panchayat were informed about the incident, but by the time the woman had given birth to a baby.

Thereafter, a motor boat was arranged to cross the river and the woman and the newborn were shifted to a health sub-centre at Reddy village. Both the mother and newborn are doing well, local sources said. Meanwhile, incessant rainfall in the district for the past several days has caused a flood-like situation in many areas of the district. Floodwaters have inundated low-lying areas in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh with people facing extreme hardships.
