Water level of Punpun river is now receding, says Bihar WRD minister

Bihar water resources department minister Sanjay Kumar Jha talked about the floods in Bihar and informed about the current situation of the Punpun and Ganga river.

New Delhi: Bihar water resources department (WRD) minister Sanjay Kumar Jha on Sunday spoke about the prevailing flood situation in the state saying that the water level of Punpun river along with the river Ganga has started to recede.

"The water level has decreased by two feet in Punpun river which will prevent further flood situation in the state," said Sanjay Kumar Jha.

Talking to ETV Bharat, Jha said that the engineers were camping at the site where the dam broke and they plugged the dam using 800 sacks of sand.

"When the water recedes, it's natural that diseases like dengue and malaria will spread. The state health department is on alert and is extending all possible help to the public," stated Jha.

Commenting on the 50-year-old Farakka barrage, Jha said that there is a need to increase the outlet in the barrage so that more water can flow through it.

He also said that from January to April, Bihar receives just 400 cusecs of Ganga water, instead of 1500 cusecs, the amount stated in the Farakka water treaty.

"Bihar is facing injustice and the centre should ensure that the state receives its share of water," added Sanjay Kumar Jha.
