New Delhi: Former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, in his first press conference after 106 days, got emotional while answering a question on the rising incidents of rap and mob lynching in India.

Chidambaram said he was shocked

The senior Congress leader said that he felt shocked and ashamed after he saw as many as six incidents of rape and lynching in a newspaper.

"It is shameful that a section of our people think that they can get away with these acts of impunity," he said.

"There is a complete breakdown of law and order in many parts of India. What is the police doing? Where is the fear of law?" he questioned.

The former Union Minister, who was walked out of Tihar Jail yesterday after being granted bail, today hit out at the Centre over the country's economic situation.

He said the Modi government was "clueless" and was being "mulish" in defending its mistakes.
