Maharashtra: Woman sells off her mangalsutra to donate to PM-CARES Fund

Neeta Lande, a middle-aged woman from Washim district of Maharashtra, is a tailor by profession and has been out of work since the start of the nationwide lockdown. But lack of income did not stop her from doing her bit for the country. Lande sold her gold mangalsutra for Rs. 5,000 and donated the money to the PM-CARES fund.

Washim (Maharashtra):While donations are pouring in for the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES Fund) set up to combat the crisis triggered by coronavirus outbreak, a woman of limited means sold her gold mangalsutra to do her bit to support the country’s fight against the deadly virus.

Neeta Lande, a middle-aged woman from Washim district of Maharashtra, is a tailor by profession and has been out of work ever since the nationwide lockdown was imposed on March 24 and extended till May 3 to contain the spread of the infection.

But lack of income did not stop Lande from doing her bit for the country.

Lande decided to sell her gold mangalsutra - an auspicious piece of jewellery which is tied by the groom around the bride’s neck as per Hindu wedding ritual - for Rs. 5,000, which she later handed over to village Tahsildar Dheeraj Manjre to be donated to the PM-CARES fund.

Similar examples of ordinary citizens making their humble contribution to the relief fund have been reported from across the country.
