Waqf files application in SC denying risk of COVID-19 due to burial of infected bodies

The Waqf refused the claims of the petitioner according to whom coronavirus may spread if bodies are buried and said that the fear is completely "unfounded and unsupported by advisories issued by the Government of India as well as by the World Health Organisation".

New Delhi: After Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, now Navpada Masjid Bandra and Santacruz Golibar Dargah Trust, have moved to the Supreme Court filing an application against the petition which sought a temporary ban on the burial of bodies who died due to coronavirus citing risks of spreading the disease in the neighbourhood.

The Waqf denied the claims of the petitioner according to whom coronavirus may spread if bodies are buried and said that the fear is completely "unfounded and unsupported by advisories issued by the Government of India as well as by the World Health Organisation".

It added that the burial of dead bodies is essential for the religious purpose.

The applications, similar to the one of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, citied that the Health Ministry's and WHO's guidelines which have to be followed during the burial and also the clarification by the WHO that the disease won't spread through burial.

WHO had clarified that except in cases of hemorrhagic fevers like Ebola, Marburg, Cholera, dead bodies are generally infectious. And only the lungs of the patients suffering from pandemic influenza, if handled improperly during an autopsy, can be infectious else in rest of the cases it is safe to bury a body.

The government and WHO have issued various guidelines like usage of masks, gloves, not touching the body, avoiding children and senior citizens to attend the burial, avoiding funerals, social distancing, etc as precautionary measures to avoid the spread of coronavirus.
