Vote counting on in Karnataka local polls

Counting of votes in Karnataka's local polls is underway. Polls were held in 5,728 Gram Panchayats for 82,616 seats in two phases.

Davanagere:Vote counting for the Karnataka local body elections is underway in different parts of the state, including Shivamogga and Davanagere. Voting for the same had taken place on Sunday.

The three main parties that contested the polls are Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular. Polls were held in 5,728 Gram Panchayats for 82,616 seats in two phases.

In the first phase, elections were held for 43,238 seats while the second phase covered 39,378 seats. Candidates for 8,074 seats have already been elected unopposed.

Elections for 242 panchayats were not held due to reasons including non-completion of the current term and pending of Court proceedings.

The Election Commission has conducted the Gram Panchayat polls using ballot papers except for Bidar district where it has used EVMs.According to the EC, 2.94 lakh people were eligible to cast their vote in the elections.
