Villagers pelt stones at medical staff, ambulance escorting COVID-19 positive patients in Karnataka

Health workers were attacked by villagers in Karnataka after a medical team had gone to escort 15 people who had tested positive for COVID-19. Intervention by the SP had resolved the situation and the patients were shifted to the hospital, later.

Kalaburagi (Karnataka): A team of medical personnel, escorting 15 COVID-19 positive patients to a hospital, were attacked by the residents of Tanda village, who reportedly pelted stones at ambulance and another vehicle, here on Tuesday.

"A medical team along with some police personnel had gone to Tanda village to bring 15 people who had tested positive for COVID-19 to a hospital for treatment on Monday," SP Kalaburagi Lada Martin Marbaniang said.

"The team allegedly had an argument with villagers, which turned violent and the latter started pelting stones at the ambulance and a vehicle of the health department," the SP added.

"On getting information, we rushed more security forces to the village. I visited the spot and spoke to a few leaders. Subsequently, we were able to convince them and transport the patients to the hospital. A case has been registered against violent offenders," he added.
