Veteran Congress leader Motilal Vora passes away

New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader Motilal Vora passed away at Fortis Escort Hospital in Delhi on Monday. He recently turned 93

Vora had earlier tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the national capital.  

The Congress leader was a Rajya Sabha member from Chhattisgarh till April this year. He was also the AICC general secretary (administration) before the recent party reshuffle by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Vora worked for several newspapers before he forayed into politics and won his first assembly election in 1972. Subsequently, he was inducted into the cabinet as a Union Minister in Arjun's Singh's administration in 1983. 

In 1985, he was sworn into office as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. He also served as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh in 1993. 

After his tenure as Governor ended, he contested and won the 1998 Lok Sabha elections from Rajnandgaon constituency in Madhya Pradesh, albeit he lost the following election to Dr. Raman of BJP. He also served four terms as a Rajya Sabha member from Chattisgarh.
