Uttarakhand village boasts daughters' name on house plaques

As a part of Ghaur Ki Pachyan, Nauni Ku Nau' initiative to create awareness on gender rights, Uttarakhand's Pauri village has displayed names of their daughters on the house plagues.

Pauri Garhwal: The house plaques in Uttarakhand's Pauri Garhwal district boasts the names of its daughters as a part of 'Ghaur Ki Pachyan, Nauni Ku Nau (Identity of the house, in the name of the daughter)'. In a first, Uttarakhand's program is an effort by the district administration to create awareness about gender rights and property ownership among women and their families.

The programme was launched on September 9 and on that occasion, Minister of State for Higher Education Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat distributed the nameplates of daughter's name in Budeshu village of Khirsu block.

The administration, which has been reaching out to families in the village and convincing them to display the names of their daughters on the nameplates, has so far given house plaques to over 125 houses with 70 in Budeshu and 55 in Malli village.

The villagers, especially the daughters of the village, have expressed pleasure over the district administration's efforts and are co-operating with them.

"It gives me immense happiness when someone knocks on the door and asks, this is Aarti's house?," said 21-year old Aarti, adding that this makes her feel very important. Families in the village feel that the government is taking every necessary step to build a strong society and they appreciate it.

The programme has been started under the mass awareness component of the Central government's 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' programme.

District Chief Development Officer (CDO) Ashish Bhatgain said that efforts are being made continuously to empower daughters and create their identity in society.

"With the help of this initiative, daughters will get their recognition. This will also change the mindset of people who have misconceptions about daughters in society. With the help of this scheme, daughters will be strengthened and strengthened along with bringing them an identity in the society," he added.
