New Delhi: Ahead of the 74th United Nations General Assembly session in New York, India once again stressed for reforms in the Security Council and the emphasised on India's need for a permanent seat in the council.
During a press briefing, Foreign Secretary said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's agenda includes pointing out the need for reforms in the multilateral forum.
India to focus on reforms and permanent membership in the UNSC "Prime Minister's agenda of reformed multilateralism is that Security Council must be reflective of the current reality," Gokhale said.
"However, this is a view which required consensus within the United Nations and as India continues to raise the case, we need to access the amount of fraction this issue brings," he added.
Though India is all set to get a non-permanent seat in the UNSC for a two-year term in 2021-2022, the permanent seat still eludes the nation, which is home to 17 per cent of the World's population.
Russia, France, USA, and Britain have supported India’s claim for permanent membership on several occasions, but the proposal was vetoed by China on every single occasion.
"By any yardstick, be it the population, size of the economy, participation in UN peace keeping operations and India's contribution to SDGs India is the perfect candidate for the permanent membership," Gokhale said on India's permanent membership bid at the UNSC.
Prime minister Narendra Modi will address the UN General Assembly session on the morning of September 27.
