Thorough testing needed before drivers given license: CSIR Scientist

Central Road Research Institute's Principal Scientist Dr S Velmurugan on Wednesday said that the move by Modi government of removing the minimum educational qualification criteria required for obtaining commercial vehicle driver's license needs to undergo thorough testing. He said that the move will have a positive impact only if the drivers were scrutinized properly.

New Delhi: A day after Modi government decided to remove the minimum educational qualification criteria required for obtaining commercial vehicle driver's license, experts said that the beneficiaries applying for the same under this move need to undergo thorough testing.

Central Road Research Institute's Principal Scientist Dr. S Velmurugan while cautioning said that the move will have a positive impact only if the drivers will be scrutinized properly.

"These individuals applying for driver's license should be scrutinized in a flawless manner, only then this move will have a positive impact rather than negative," he said.

Dr. Velmurugan, however, accepted that this move from the government will certainly create several job opportunities to the skilled individuals who are not able to get proper education.

At the moment, under the Rule 8 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, a commercial vehicle driver needs to have a minimum education qualification i.e. he/she should have passed class 8.
