Jothi Sri Durga, 19, committed suicide a day before the test by hanging from a fan at her home in Madurai over fears she may not pass in the exam.

Madurai: A teenager killed herself in Tamil Nadu because she feared she may not get through her qualifying test for medical studies - known as NEET, according to reports.

Jothi Sri Durga, 19, committed suicide a day before the test by hanging from a fan at her home in Madurai. Reports said a suicide note found in her house at Tallakulam contained emotional lines.

"My family has a lot of expectations and if I don't get a seat in a preferred college, the family's hard work will go in vain. I am sorry," reports quoted the suicide note.

Her father Muruga Sundaram is a sub-inspector with the state police.

Reports said Durga has been preparing for the tests over the past week. She failed to enrol last year due to low score in the tests and appeared very troubled. Police in Madurai are investigating the case.
