Debts suspected in death of Tamil Nadu family

A debt-ridden couple allegedly ended their lives after killing their three children in Villupuram. Initial inquiry reveals that the man had taken a loan and was unable to repay as pressure mounted from lenders.

Villupuram: In a tragic incident, a 38-year-old man and his wife allegedly ended their lives after killing their three children in Tamil Nadu. According to information, Mohan and his wife Vimala Sri reportedly killed themselves due to financial stress.

Police sources said that Mohan was a carpenter was a profession and was a resident of Valavanur Pudupalayam village in Villupuram district. He owned a wood workshop and lived with his wife and three children - Rajasree (8) and Nithyasree (5) and Sivabalan (10).

During the coronavirus-induced lockdown, Mohan had mortgaged his house and took a loan from the bank and various people. Unable to earn any profit, he was not in a position to pay interest for the debt. Loaners pressured him to pay the interest amount and Mohan was under mental stress. Police suspect that it might be the reason for him to take such a drastic step.

Locals raised an alarm when nobody opened the door of the house and informed the police. After receiving the information, a police team rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies. Police suspect that the couple strangled the children before hanging themselves.

The bodies have been sent to Mundiambakkam Hospital for post-mortem.

Nallasivam, Deputy superintendent of police, said, "We have sent the bodies for autopsy and an investigation has been launched."
