Student develops portable ventilator in collaboration with NIT, Calicut University

An MBBS student Nimil Salam from Oorngattiri in Malappuram district has developed a low-cost portable ventilator. Ventilators are in high demand across India due to the rise in the number of COVID-19 positive patients.

Malappuram:A medical student Nimil Salam has developed a low-cost portable ventilator in collaboration with National Institute of Technology (NIT) - Calicut and Calicut University's Physics department owing to the increased need for ventilators for COVID-19 patients.

Therattammal native is a third-year MBBS student in Karuna Medical College in Palakkad.

Nimil’s portable ventilator cost about Rs 20000 whereas the actual cost of a ventilator system which is used in hospitals is in lakhs.

A the COVID-19 cases are rising, ventilators are in high demand in for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Chipping in with his technical expertise to boost the efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, Nimil has developed the ventilator models that could serve as portable breathing assistants to support patients with respiratory problems.

The latest technology, Internet of Things (IoT) technique has been used in developing the portable ventilator.

Nimil and his family hope to get a nod from the Health Department to use it in the state's hospitals after they inspect and verify it.
