New Delhi: SAD leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Thursday said that she resigned from the Union Cabinet to protest three farm sector bills.

Addressing media, the SAD leader said that the struggle has just begun and she is proud to stand with farmers.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal said, "In May, these ordinances were taken up and several issues were raised. I was looking after Food Processing Industry and I realised that these ordinances were favourable for Food Processing Industries but will impact MSP and farmers."

"A party delegation had met BJP president JP Nadda and requested to address these concerns. No changes were made and bills were tabled in the house in the initial days of the session. Today I have submitted my resignation and as the daughter of Punjab, I will stand by my farmers in their struggle," she added.

Shiromani Akali Dal President and Member Parliament Sukhbir Singh Badal strongly opposed the bills related with farm ordinances.

He said," There were some issues with these ordinances which we raised with BJP. Farmer leaders from Punjab raised these concerns with me and I met them many times. These issues were not solved so we quit from Union Cabinet but will continue with NDA alliance."

Except for Sunny Deol and Som Parkash, all MPs of Punjab have strongly opposed these bills. Congress MPs on Thursday burnt copies of these bills in Parliament as a protest.

Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill. It has already passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment), Bill. They will replace ordinances promulgated by the Union government.
