Solar winds could be the reason for Chandrayaan 2's setback

Director of the Birla Science Centre Dr BG Sidharth said that there still was a 'one in a million' chance of Chandrayaan-2's Vikram lander re-establishing contact with the ground station.

Hyderabad:Responding to ISRO losing contact with Chandrayaan-2's Vikram lander, Dr BG Sidharth, Director of Birla Science Centre on Saturday said that solar winds could possibly be the reason for Chandrayaan 2 setback.

Sidharth said solar winds could possibly be a reason for contact being cut-off.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Sidharth said, "There is still one in a million chance that communication may suddenly begin. Yes, it is extremely unlikely, but it cannot be ruled out."

He further added that there was a possibility that Vikram module did actually land, but the world was unaware of it because of the lack of communication.

On the possible reasons for contact being cut-off, he said, "It could have been because of solar winds, which freely fall on the Moon." He added that the case was different with respect to the Moon as it does not have an atmosphere. On the other hand, the Earth possesses an atmosphere, which shields the planet from solar winds.

Sidharth explained that ISRO will have to asses what went wrong, in case it actually did, and should do so carefully as 'there was no hurry'.

In the early hours of Saturday, communication from 'Vikram' lander to ground stations was lost during its powered descent to the Lunar surface, and ISRO said data is being analysed.
