Special bench of SC to hear petitions challenging modification of Article 370

A Special bench of the Supreme Court will hear two important petitions challeging the modification of Article 370 and the restrictions imposed in the valley in the wake of recent amendments. One of the petitioner claimed violation of freedom of speech and expression following the internet lockdown in the valley.

New Delhi:A three member bench consisting of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer will hear the petitions challenging the modification of Article 370 and the subsequent restrictions imposed in the valley, on August 16.

According to reports, one petition challenges the Presidential order of August 5 which amended Article 367, paying the way towards the modification of Article 370.

Whereas, the second petition seeks lifting of restrictions on communication services and movement in Jammu and Kashmir, which were imposed following the modification of Article 370 and bifurcation of the state into two Union Territory.

The above-mentioned petition was filed by Anuradha Bhasin, highlighting the shutdown of internet and telecommunication, the severe restrictions on mobility.

The petition also alleges violation of freedom of speech and expression under Article 19, the right of the public to information and the right to practice one's profession.
