Six infants die in 48 hours in Madhya Pradesh hospital

After the death of four infants were reported from Madhya Pradesh's Shahdol government hospital, two more deaths have been reported. The CMHO has ordered a detailed probe into the matter as kin of the infants have alleged negligence.

Shahdol: A probe has been ordered against the death of six infants, including two newborns, within a span of 48 hours at a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh's Shahdol.

While the death of five children was reported on Sunday, the death of a newborn surfaced today morning, triggering allegations of medical negligence.

The death of six infants in two days has raised several questions on hospital management and its authorities.

The relatives of the newborn, who died on Sunday, alleged that the doctors did not take immediate action and did not allow them to meet their baby.

However, the hospital in its statement, said that babies were brought in a serious condition.

Shahdol's Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Rajesh Pandey said, "A detailed probe has been ordered into the deaths of infants and if any negligence on the part of the hospital is found, punitive action will be taken against the concerned authorities. A committee has been constituted for the probe."

The deceased infants were admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the newborn died at the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan called an emergency meeting with the senior health officials in the wake of the death of infants.

Congress also protested against the same outside the hospital. However, after the intervention of the administration, the agitation came to an end.

Earlier in January this year, six tribal infants died in Shahdol and action was taken against the Chief Medical Health Officer and surgeon upon the instructions of then health minister Tulsi Silawat.
