In response to a PIL which sought to bring back fishermen from Iran, the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the government is in touch with the Iran embassy and the authorities are in touch with around 1000 fishermen. They are on long terms visas and both the embassies are in touch over the issue.
Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayan appearing for the petitioner contended that, "There is a memo which shows that bills for food were raised by the company given charge of supplying food three weeks ago. They have not been paid. There has been no supply of food to them for the last three weeks."
Disagreed with Sankaranarayan, the bench said that they have long term visas and have WhatsApp connectivity through which they are contacting.
"Government is helping. Whatever can be done, will be done. The situation has gone out of hand across the world. The embassy should be informed about these issues and action should be taken," observed the court.
Also over the PIL which sought to bring back citizens from the USA, the bench said that the government is doing whatever they can, US government has also extended the visas and they can not be directed to return in the present circumstances amid coronavirus outbreak.
