SC disposes Agnivesh's plea over lockdown crisis, Centre says trust us

A Supreme Court bench led by Justice NV Ramana disposed of a plea filed by activist Swami Agnivesh seeking relief to the Economically Weaker Sections who have been hit hard by the ongoing lockdown.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking immediate relief to the poor, homeless, and the Economically Weaker Sections, who are facing problems due to the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown.

A bench led by Justice NV Ramana disposed of the plea filed by Swami Agnivesh.

Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for Agnivesh, contended that the lockdown has created a huge crisis and though the Centre's affidavit claims that everything is done, in reality, nothing has been implemented.

On behalf of the Centre, Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta said, "You have no reason to not trust us".

Adding on further he said that he has serious reservations about this particular PIL and said that the court should not entertain the matter.

"These are self-employment generating petitions. The court should not entertain such petitions," he said.

He further assured the court that the Centre will ensure that all directives are followed.
