Rise in face temperature indicates involvement in crime, says research

The team of IIT Kanpur has conducted new research which reveals that there is a change in the facial expressions and temperature of a person when he is involved in an act of guilt or embarrassment.

Kanpur: In a first, students and teachers of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have conducted research to identify the criminals with the help of their facial expressions and body temperatures. The team has conducted massive research on human emotions like guilt and shame and found out that temperatures of criminals' face can drop ample hints about his/her involvement. The research says that a rise in face temperature indicates a person's involvement in criminal activities.

Based on lie detector and Narco test techniques, face detector method was used by the IIT Kanpur team for their research.

Professor of Humanities and Social Science department Braj Bhushan, Mechanical engineer professor PK Panigarhi, researchers Shabnam Basu and Saurabh Dutta conducted the research in two phases.

In the first research, 30 students were asked to write down incidents in which they faced embarrassment and shame and it was given a pictorial presentation.

In the second round, the diagrams were shown to another 150 students on computer screens and were asked how they feel. They told that after seeing these diagrams gave them a sense of shame, guilt and embarrassment.

The research was published in Journal Frontier in Psychology and analysed.

When the pictures were shown to 31 new students, high-resolution cameras were installed. Head, cheeks, the upper part of the nose and eyes of the students were analysed.

Braj Bhushan said that camera captures revealed that face temperatures soared by 0.5-degree celsius and it took 15 seconds for them to cool down.

He said that in case of guilt, the temperature of the left side of cheeks, the upper portion of cheeks and forehead soared. This module has been sent to the Journal of National Law University.
