Researchers find rare species of plant in Kerala

The plant which was unknown to local people got featured in an international journal as scientists found it in Ananthapura, Kumbala in Kasaragod district of Kerala.

Kasaragod: A rare floral plant with rose coloured blooms was spotted by scientists in the laterite rocky plateaus at Ananthapura, Kumbala in Kasaragod district of Kerala. The plant was named as ‘Lepidagathis Ananathapuramensis’, attributing to the place it was found.

It was found on the laterite rocks in the premises of Ananthapura Lake temple. The period from June to December was reported to be the blooming period of the plant. The peer-reviewed international scientific journal named Phytotaxa, published in New Zealand featured the plant.

The scientific study also revealed laterite rock as home to such rare species and plants. The plant researchers studied plants which grow on rock crevices, rocks and laterite rocks. The plant was unknown to everyone till now and the villagers were amazed as the plant got featured in the international journal.
