Surat: Shri Adarsh Ramlila Trust has cancelled programmes like Ramlila Manchan, Ravana Dahan in the view of the pandemic. The history of performing Ramlila on stage in the city is ancient. Navratri is celebrated in every street of Surat where people from all walks of life become part of festivities.
A large number of North Indians involved in the textile industry in Surat are affected.
Anil Agarwal,Shri Adarsh Ramlila Trust Head Regarding the decision not to hold Ramlila this time, the trust said that all the events that cause crowding have been cancelled or postponed. So for the first time in 45 years, the live stage of Ramlila has also been cancelled.
During Navratri, Ramlila Manch is held in every village in North India. This stage performance was started 45 years ago in 1975 at Singapore Wadi in Sagarampura, Surat. After this, the place of staging and enacting grew and the curiosity and faith of the people increased towards Ramlila. These include the Chowpatty and Mohan Park at Athwalines, then the Radhakrishna Party Plot at Parle Point, the Vrindavan Park at Ghoddod and finally the party plot at Ramlila Maidan in Vesu of the Surat Municipal Corporation.
Shri Adarsh Ramlila Trust Head Anil Agarwal said normally, we start with preparations about two months prior to Ramlila. But this time the programme of Ramlila and Ravana Dahan has been cancelled in order to curb COVID-19. For years, a group of 35 people from Mathura and Vrindavan have been coming to Surat to stage Ramlila. People from Ghaziabad come to Surat every year for fireworks, however, this time Ravan Dahan and Ram Leela have been cancelled.
