Intense rainfall activity over central, north and south India for next four days

New Delhi:  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday forecast heavy rainfall over several parts of central and north India for the next four days.

The IMD said heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls at isolated places are very likely over east Madhya Pradesh and at isolated places over west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha (Maharashtra) and Chhattisgarh on August 28.

Heavy rainfall at isolated places are likely over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa and Telangana for August 28.

For the same day, moderate to severe thunderstorm, accompanied with lightning at isolated places, are also very likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Strong winds with speed reaching 45-55 kilometres per hour are very likely over the southwest Arabian Sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas, the IMD said.

The MeT Department said due to heavy rainfall over east Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, localised flooding of roads, water logging in low lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas is expected on August 28.

Over 83.62 lakh people continue to suffer in Bihar floods

Patna:Over 83.62 lakh people continued to suffer due to the floods in Bihar with the Ganga flowing over the danger-mark at many places, officials said on Thursday.

The water level of the river breached the danger-mark at Gandhi Ghat and Hathidah in Patna, and Kahalgaon in the Bhagalpur district, as per an official bulletin issued by the Water Resources Department.

The Bagmati river was flowing above the danger level at five places in the state, it added.

Total 83,62,451 people continued to suffer in 1,333 panchayat areas of 130 blocks in 16 districts, the bulletin said.

There was no change in the figures for the fifth consecutive day.

Flood-related toll remained at 27. The last fatality was reported on August 20.

Most of the deaths have been reported from Darbhanga where 11 people died, followed by Muzaffarpur (six), West Champaran (four), Saran, Siwan and Khagaria (two each), the bulletin said.

The 16 districts that have been hit by the flood are Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Supaul, Kishanganj, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, West Champaran, East Champaran, Khagaria, Saran, Samastipur, Siwan, Madhubani, Madhepura and Saharsa.

The flood situation is improving every day even though some rivers are in spate and flowing above the danger level, an official of the Water Resources Department said.

Heavy rain triggers flood in parts of Odisha, rivers in spate

Bhubaneswar:  Heavy downpour triggered by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal led to a flood situation in parts of Odisha on Thursday amid swelling rivers, officials said.

Major rivers such as Baitarani, Brahmani, Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga are in spate with their water flowing above the danger-mark, submerging low-lying areas and paddy fields in several districts, Disaster Management Minister Sudam Marndi said.

Arrangements were made to evacuate people to safer places in Bhadrak, Balasore and Jajpur, he said, adding that steps were also taken to provide them food.

The state recorded an average rainfall of 55.8 mm since Wednesday, the minister said.

Six districts received average showers of more than 100 mm, while nine districts got more than 50 mm rainfall during the period, he said.

The state government is fully prepared to deal with the flood situation, and a thorough assessment of damage to crops and properties will be made when the water recedes, Marndi said.

Jharsuguda district recorded the highest 177 mm rainfall, followed by 128.5 mm in Deogarh, 116.7 mm in Sambalpur, 114 mm in Boudh, and 107 mm in Angul district, Special Relief Commissioner P K Jena said.

Parts of UP receive light to moderate rainfall

Lucknow:Light to moderate rainfall occurred at a few places in Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours, the Meteorological department said on Thursday.  

The MeT department said heavy rain lashed some isolated places in the state, while thunderstorm occurred at a few locations.  

Mauranipur in Jhansi received 14 cm rainfall, Bhinga in Shrawasti (10 cm) and Nighasan in Lakhimpur Kheri (9 cm), it said.

Basti, Chandradeepghat in Gorakhpur and Thakurdwara in Moradabad each received 7 cm rainfall, the MeT department said.

Bahraich and Bijnore each received 6 cm rain, while Turtipar in Ballia and Rath in Hamirpur each recorded 5 cm rainfall, it said.

The MeT department has forecast rain or thundershower at many places over western Uttar Pradesh and at a few locations in the eastern part of the state on Friday.

Rains resume in MP, red alert issued for 4 eastern districts

Bhopal:The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a red alert stating that extremely heavy rainfall is very likely in four districts of eastern Madhya Pradesh, where monsoon activities have revived in the last 24 hours.

It also issued orange and yellow alerts for some other districts in the state.

All the alerts are valid till Friday morning, an official said.

The red alert, issued by the IMD''s Bhopal office, said that extremely heavy rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur at isolated places of Balaghat, Tikamgarh, Damoh and Sagar districts.

The orange alert warned that very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm and lightning is likely at isolated places in 12 districts, including Jabalpur and two divisions of the state- Rewa and Shahdol.

Heavy rains lash Kolkata, waterlogging in several areas

Kolkata:Heavy rains lashed Kolkata and the coastal districts of West Bengal on Thursday, inundating low-lying areas, officials said.

Several thoroughfares were waterlogged in different parts of Kolkata, including BT Road, Central Avenue, College Street, Amherst Street and EM Bypass, due to the showers that began on Wednesday evening, the weather office said.

However, there were no traffic snarls in the metropolis as COVID-related restrictions were in place but those who went out on essential work or are associated with emergency services had a tough time reaching their destinations.

Many low-lying areas in Ghatal in West Midnapore district and Khanakul in Hooghly, and some places in South 24 Parganas district were submerged owing to the heavy overnight rains.

Diamond Harbour recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 67 mm in the 24 hours till 8.30 am, followed by Dumdum at 56 mm and Salt Lake at 52 mm, the Met department said.

Flood situation improves in Uttar Pradesh; 17 districts affected now

Lucknow: The flood situation in Uttar Pradesh improved on Thursday and the number of districts affected by the deluge came down to 17 from 19 on the previous day, officials said here.

Pilibhit and Sant Kabir Nagar are no longer on the list of affected districts, they said.

"The flood situation is improving in the state. There are 17 flood-affected districts, where 893 villages are affected, of which 562 are marooned," state Relief Commissioner Sanjay Goel said.

Till Wednesday, 19 districts with 922 villages were affected by the flood.

The affected districts are Ambedkarnagar, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bahraich, Ballia, Barabanki, Basti, Deoria, Farrukhabad, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Kasganj,  Kushinagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Mau, Shahjananpur and Sitapur.

The relief commissioner said the Sharda river at Palia Kalan in Lakhimpur Kheri, the Rapti river in Shravasti and the Saryu river in Ayodhya and Turtipar in Ballia were flowing above the danger mark.

He said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to monitor water levels of rivers and alert people residing in nearby villages if necessary.

Heavy rains bring respite from heat in Kashmir

Srinagar: Heavy rainfall over the past two days in Kashmir has brought respite from the rising temperatures as the mercury has plunged by several degrees across the valley, officials said on Thursday.

They said the continuous rainfall across Kashmir since the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday has also brought relief to the farmers as the valley had reeled under dry weather conditions over the past three months.

Srinagar city recorded a maximum temperature of 35.7 degrees Celsius on August 17 which was the hottest August day in the last 39 years.

The mercury in the city and elsewhere in the valley had stayed above the normal by several degrees this month.

However, the rains have brought down the temperature with the city recording the maximum of 22.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday which is 13 degrees lower than what it recorded on August 17, the officials said.

The maximum temperature in Srinagar is 6.6 degrees below the normal for this part of the season, they added.

The other places in the valley also experienced huge relief from the hotter days due to the rains as the mercury went down by several degrees.

Heavy rains trigger flood-like situation in Bhadrak  

Bhadrak: Heavy rainfall in Odisha's Bhadrak has resulted in a flood-like situation. Moreover, the water-level of the Baitarani River has also risen amid incessant rains.

People here were seen wading through waist-deep water in the flooded areas.  

The situation is such that the villagers of Hasnabad were seen using rubber tubes to get around from one place to another.

Villagers of Chaturbhujpur and Bhandaripokhari block are shifting to a safer place as the water level of Baitarani and other rivers is rising. 

Meanwhile, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar has predicted moderate rainfall accompanied by thundershowers in the district today.

Odisha Chief Secretary reviews flood-like situation in 12 districts

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Secretary Asit Tripathi has reviewed the rainfall and possible flood-like situation with collectors of 12 districts, officials of Water Resources Department and other concerned departments.

"Chief Secretary has directed to the collectors to closely monitor the situation and take all preemptive steps to save life and evacuation of the people from vulnerable areas if required, Patrolling in the low laying areas and to monitor the Walter level constantly," said Special Relief Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena.

J-K: Rajouri police issues alert in view of heavy rainfall  

Rajouri:Following heavy rains, an alert was issued by the police here and people have been advised not to move close to any water body.

A press statement from Rajouri police read, "In view of heavy rainfall in last 12 hours, most of the water bodies are heavily flooded. Keeping in view all this, an alert is issued and people are advised not to move close to any water body. Besides, in case of any emergency, people can contact the officers and helpline numbers of police across Rajouri district which are given below."

As per a weather advisory issued by the Meteorological Department department in Jammu and Kashmir, "widespread moderate rainfall" is likely across J&K for 72 hours beginning Tuesday night.

"Widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected in Kashmir division on August 26, 27," the advisory said. "Scattered light to moderate rain is also expected in Ladakh during this period. The wet spell is likely to reduce the rainfall deficit witnessed in J&K and Ladakh this year."

The inclement weather "may lead to disruption of traffic on 270-kilometer Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Srinagar-Leh National Highway, Mughal Road and Sadhna Pass."
