Bhubaneswar: In view of possible enhanced rainfall due to low-pressure area over North-Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) of Odisha has written to all the district collectors to monitor the situation and remain prepared and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea from August 25 to 27. 

"As per the special bulletin-2 issued by IMD on Monday, under influence of yesterday's cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and neighbourhood, a low-pressure area has formed over north Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood and the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestward with height. It is likely to become more marked during the next 2 days," read a message from Odisha SRC.

Bihar flood situation stable; 83.62 lakh people affected

Patna: The flood situation remained stable in Bihar for the second consecutive day and the number of people hit by the deluge is 83.62 lakh across 16 districts, the Disaster Management Department said on Monday.

The number of flood victims and affected areas remained the same since Saturday, the department''s bulletin said adding that 83,62,451 people in 1,333 panchayats of 130 blocks are reeling under the impact of the calamity.

Flood-related deaths also remained unchanged at 27.

The highest 11 casualties were registered in Darbhanga district, followed by six in Muzaffarpur, four in West Champaran and two each in Saran, Siwan and Khagaria.

Bhubaneswar: With the formation of a new low-pressure area over north Bay of Bengal likely to trigger heavy rain in most parts of Odisha till Thursday, the state government has asked district collectors to deal with possible flash flood, landslide and water-logging.  

Under the influence of Sundays cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and its neighbourhood, a low-pressure area has formed over north Bay of Bengal and neighbouring areas, the MeT Centre here said.

Heavy rain likely in Gangetic West Bengal: MeT

Kolkata: The weatherman, in its forecast, said heavy rain is likely to occur in Gangetic West Bengal in the next three days due to formation of a low pressure area in north Bay of Bengal. The low-pressure system is likely to intensify in the next couple of days, it said.

The districts of East and West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura and Birbhum are likely to receive heavy rainfall, while thunderstorm is likely in other places of Gangetic West Bengal from Monday, the Met office said. The intensity of rain is likely to increase in the coastal districts from Tuesday with the low-pressure system becoming more marked, and it may continue till Friday morning.

Due to the formation of the low pressure in north Bay of Bengal, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till Thursday. With several rivers in the region already in spate owing to heavy downpour over the last week, people living in the coastal districts are apprehensive of flooding of agricultural fields and low-lying areas.

The state Irrigation Department has said that it is keeping watch on the situation. Heavy rain occurred in Birbhum district, while other parts of Gangetic West Bengal also received rainfall since Sunday morning, the Met department said.

Some low-lying areas in the coastal districts of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore have got inundated owing to overflowing of some rivers and heavy rain causing breaches in earthen embankments, district officials said.

Water level of Rajasthan's River Chambal may cross danger mark by today midnight, warns CWC

Dholpur (Rajasthan): The water level of River Chambal in Dholpur district of Rajasthan may cross the warning and danger mark and attain peak around 1.6 m on Monday, said the Central Water Commission (CWC). 

While the river will cross the warning level between 2 pm to 4 pm, it will surpass the danger level by today midnight. 

"River Chambal in Dholpur District of Rajasthan is rising and is likely to cross warning level between 14 to 1600 hours today and cross danger level and attain peak around 1.6 m above DL by today midnight," the commission tweeted. 

Meanwhile, the CWC issued flash flood risk outlook for Rajasthan for 12 hours. "High risk over some areas of South Rajasthan and adjoining Gujarat subdivision," it said. 

Earlier in the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted isolated extremely heavy rainfall over southwest Rajasthan.

Car washed away in overflowing river in Rajasthan

A car got washed away at a culvert in Sirohi of Rajasthan as the river overflowed after continuous rainfall in the area. 

The villagers informed Sawarupganj police station about the incident. 

The police along with villagers rescued the two passengers travelling in the car after 1 hour.

Rains likely in parts of Delhi, NCR: IMD

Parts of the Delhi and National Capital Region will witness light rains and drizzle on Monday, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

"Drizzle over South-Delhi, Dadri and Kosali during the next two hours," it said.

"Light rain/ drizzle would occur over and adjoining areas of Palwar, Ballabhgarh, Farukhnagar and isolated areas of entire Delhi during next two hours," it added.

It said Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26.4 degrees Celsius.

Heavy rainfall likely over Gujarat, southwest Rajasthan today: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted isolated extremely heavy rainfall over southwest Rajasthan and Gujarat.

"The low-pressure area lies over central parts of south Rajasthan and neighbourhood. It is very likely to move nearly westwards across west Rajasthan during next 2 days and become less marked thereafter. However, the associated cyclonic circulation is likely to meander over south Rajasthan neighbourhood region for subsequent 2-3 days. The monsoon is likely to remain active during next 2-3 days," IMD said,

Under the influence of the above systems, "isolated extremely heavy falls are very likely over southwest Rajasthan and Gujarat today. Isolated heavy to very heavy falls very likely over east Rajasthan today and over west Rajasthan on August 25 and 26 and over Saurashtra and Kutch on August 25," it added.

Meanwhile, Gujarat's Surendranagar continues to receive heavy rainfall today. The Surendranagar district also facing the problem of waterlogging following heavy downpour in the area.

Low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal to trigger heavy rains in Odisha

Kolkata: Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in South Bengal from Monday owing to the possible formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, causing water levels in rivers to rise and inundating low-lying areas, the Met department said here on Sunday.

The weatherman said that an active monsoon in Gangetic West Bengal, coupled with the low pressure, is likely to cause widespread rain in the region.

The southern districts of the state have been experiencing moderate to heavy rain over the past week owing to an earlier low-pressure area in northwest Bay of Bengal that has now moved away from West Bengal, providing a respite from the continuous rain for a couple of days.

Several places in East Midnapore district were inundated owing to heavy rain and overflowing rivers, a district administration official said.

Low lying areas in Panskura, Khejuri, Mandarmoni, Patashpur and Tamluk have been inundated causing hardship to people and also loss of crops as agricultural fields were submerged in several places, the official said.

Moderate to heavy rain has been occurring in most parts of the coastal district since the morning of Sunday, the intensity of which is likely to increase from Monday, the weatherman said.

The Met department, in its forecast, said that the districts of South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia and Bankura are likely to receive heavy rainfall, the intensity of which will increase from Tuesday.

One or two places in Kolkata, along with Howrah and Hooghly districts, are also likely to experience heavy rain on Tuesday, it said.

Embankments of some rivers in the coastal areas of South 24 Parganas district have got damaged in heavy rain and high tidal waves owing to the new moon in the past week, leading to inundation of agricultural fields.

Breaches in embankments in the riverine region have also damaged many mud houses, sources said.
