Congress holds protests seeking justice for Hathras victim

New Delhi:Congress workers held protests in different parts of the country demanding justice for the victim of assault and alleged gangrape in Hathras who died in a Delhi hospital on September 29.

Congress workers took out a candlelight march near India Gate. Youth Congress workers also held a protest near Shastri Bhawan. They were also detained by police.

In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Mullappally Ramachandran and Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala along with Congress workers held a demonstration against the incident.

Congress workers held torch rally in Pune. Protesters were seen in large numbers holding torches and raising slogans against the Uttar Pradesh government.

Congress workers also staged protests in Chennai and Kolkata.

Workers of SC wing of Tamil Nadu Congress protested in Chennai against the arrest of Rahul Gandhi and demanded justice for Hathras rape victim.

Greater Noida: A case has been registered against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and over 200 others under section 188, 269 and 270 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Epidemic Act, according to the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police. 

Earlier on Thursday, Rahul and Priyanka were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police at Yamuna Expressway here while they were on the way to meet the Hathras gangrape victim's family, who had died while receiving treatment in Delhi's Safdarjung hospital on Tuesday. 

Gandhis were later released. 

Both Congress leaders alleged they were manhandled and roughed up by police personnel while they were marching towards Hathras to meet the victim's family. However, Noida Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Ranvijay Singh said that there was "no lathi charge" on anyone. 

The 19-year-old had succumbed to injuries in the Safdarjung Hospital where she was brought on Monday from Aligarh Muslim University Medical College. 

Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said that the forensic report of the Hathras victim, who succumbed to her injuries following an alleged gang rape, shows that the woman "was not raped". 

The government has formed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case and said the matter will be heard in the fast track court. All four accused in the case have been arrested. 

The senior police official said that the postmortem, which was conducted by a team of doctors in Delhi, has established that the death was caused by the trauma of her neck injury.

In a video that has surfaced on several social media platforms on Thursday, Hathras District Magistrate Praveen Laxkar can be seen telling the 19-year-old victim's father, "Half of the media people have left today, the other half will leave by tomorrow. Only we will stand with you. It is up to you whether you want to change your statement or not."

The video which went viral on social media platforms sparked a new controversy as the case has turned a 'political' revolution after several opposition parties raise the issue from the national dias.

When the media asked about the clarification of his statement, the Hathras DM asserted that the statement was given in the context to 'support' the victim's family and had no intention to demean the dignity of the family members.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were on Thursday detained by the Uttar Pradesh police after they were stopped on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida while walking towards Hathras to meet the rape victim's family.

However, they were taken away in a police jeep and kept in a guest house for sometime after which they were released. They are now headed back towards Delhi escorted by the UP police.

Nirbhaya's advocate announces to fight legal battle for Hathras victim

Advocate Seema Samriddhi Kushwaha, who represented Nirbhaya’s parents against the criminals, has announced to fight the legal battle for Hathras victim and reached her native place in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

However, the local police have stopped her entering the village of the 19-year-old victim, who scummed to her injuries on September 29 in Safdarjung hospital.

While speaking to media, she said, "I fought the legal battle for Nirbhaya for more than 7 years and I have decided to fight for Hathras victim too. I came here to meet the family members but the local police have stopped me while I was entering the village."

High drama prevailed on Thursday After Uttar Pradesh Police personnel pushed former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on the ground near the Yamuna Expressway and arrested him along with his sister and party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, while they were walking towards Hathras to meet the family of the rape victim.

Gandhi, along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other senior leaders had left Delhi on Thursday to meet the family of the Hathras rape victim.

However, they began marching towards Hathras after their vehicle was stopped near the Yamuna Expressway.

Later Rahul Gandhi told the media, "Just now police pushed me, lathi-charged me and threw me on the ground. I want to ask, can only (Narendra) Modiji walk in this country? Can't a normal person walk? Our vehicle was stopped, so we started walking."

Uttar Pradesh Police Personnel also Gandhi that his sister and he have been arrested as they were marching in an area where section 144 has been imposed.
The section relates to the assembly of not more than five people in one place.

Gandhi said that even if Section 144 had been imposed, he will walk alone towards Hathras to meet the family of the rape victim.

Before his arrest, the Congress leaders had a heated exchange with police personnel and asked the grounds on which they were being arrested.

Hathras victim not raped, reveals forensic report

The forensic report of the Hathras victim, who succumbed to her injuries following an alleged gang rape, shows that the woman was not raped, Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said on Thursday. 

"The forensic science laboratory report clearly says that sperm was not found in the samples collected from the woman... The report has made it clear that the woman was not raped," Kumar said in a press conference here.

The 19-year-old had succumbed to assault injuries in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday where she was brought on Monday from Aligarh Muslim University Medical College. 

The senior police official said that the postmortem, which was conducted by a team of doctors in Delhi, has established that the death was caused by the trauma of her neck injury.

"According to the postmortem report, the victim died due to the trauma of her neck injury. FSL report also clearly shows that sperm was not found in the collected samples. It suggests that some people twisted the matter to stir caste-based tension," Kumar said.

Sources said both the leaders left 10, Janpath, Delhi, the residence of the Congress president, and entered UP via the DND flyover, where a large number of Congress workers had gathered. Traffic was disrupted in the area.

Section 144 in Hathras, borders sealed

The district administration in Hathras has imposed Section 144 in the area and has banned the entry of all 'outsiders' including media persons, in the Boolgarhi village where the 19-year-old Dalit girl was gang-raped and died later.

District Magistrate Praveen Lakshkar said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), set up to probe the incident, had reached the village and was interacting with the family and other people to record their statements.

"They do not want any disturbance and hence, all entry of outsiders has been stopped," he said.

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP supremo Mayawati on Thursday demanded imposition of President's rule in the state, following the rape and murder of another Dalit woman in Balrampur district.

Mayawati said that the Hathras incident had led to outrage across the nation and she thought that the Yogi Adityanath government would take steps to curb such incidents from taking place.

"I feel that anti-social elements have taken over the state completely and there is no rule of law left in Uttar Pradesh. The Balrampur incident is a replay of what happened in Hathras. In such circumstances I request that President's rule should be imposed in the state," she said.

NHRC notice to Yogi govt on Hathras incident

 The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the Hathras incident of the rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit girl and has issued a notice to the Yogi Adityanath government.

The Commission has directed the state government to provide adequate protection to the family of the deceased, keeping in view the gravity of the matter and also the aspect of the witness protection as there is an apparent rift between two communities.

The government has been asked to respond to the notice within four weeks.

The DGP has been asked to look personally into the matter to ensure a speedy trial so that the culprits could be punished by the competent court without any further delay.

The notice says that in the current scenario, it is necessary that the family of the deceased as well as other members of the SC community residing in the village are provided proper protection by the police. Both the authorities are expected to submit their report, within the stipulated time.

Workers of the Congress on Wednesday held a candlelight vigil in Shimla demanding justice for Hathras gangrape victim.

Workers of the Congress and members of the National Students Union of India marched towards the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the main city square.

The protestors were seen with banners that read, "The government that couldn't save our daughters is useless."

Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday attacked the Yogi Adityanath government over the death of the Hathras gangrape victim, saying she "did not die but was murdered by the ruthless government" and "her body was consigned to flames forcibly".

New Delhi:Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will visit Hathras in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday to meet the family of the woman who died after being gang-raped, and whose cremation in the night by the police has provoked nationwide outrage.

Party sources said the permission for the visit has been sought from the Uttar Pradesh government, and they will leave for Hathras on Thursday. Many leaders of the Congress are going to accompany them.

The Congress has protested statewide on Wednesday and Rahul Gandhi had dubbed the "forcible cremation" of the Hathras gang-rape victim by the police as a "shameful" move of the Uttar Pradesh government.

"It is a shameful move of the state government to oppress the Dalits and show them their place in society," he tweeted in Hindi, tagging a news report on the cremation of the 19-year-old woman.

"Our fight is against this despicable thinking," the Congress leader added.

Earlier, the party had demanded Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's resignation for "not acting in time".

The 19-year-old Dalit woman from Hathras was cremated early Wednesday in her native village amid tight security.
