Gurdaspur: A 22-year-old woman suffered serious injuries on her thighs after a man allegedly threw acid on her a few days before her marriage, police said on Friday. Family members of the victim were attacked with sticks and stones yesterday when they were busy preparing for her marriage.
The assailant apparently wanted the woman to accept his proposal. He had come with his friends and fled after beating up the woman's father and younger brother.
The woman, a resident of Tibad village, was attacked by a jilted lover with acid a few days before her marriage and is undergoing treatment at a government hospital. She has suffered severe injuries and her condition is stable.
Kin of the victim also alleged that the woman was attacked with acid ten days back but no complaint was lodged by the police.
The family members also claimed that earlier they had tried to make the accused understand but he was adamant and was forcing the victim to accept his proposal.

"Cops are not co-operating with us as the family of the accused has some connections with the police department. We approached them earlier too but our complaints went unheard. We want justice for our daughter," the family said.
"Paras(name changed), who lives in the same village, used to harass me and was mounting pressure on me to accept his proposal. Days before my marriage, he threw acid on me. He came with his group of friends at my house yesterday and attacked my younger brother and father. My father's leg has been broken and my brother has sustained major injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the attacker was in love with the girl for the past few years and her tying the knot with someone else was not acceptable to him. He even used to threaten the victim asking her to be with him or face consequences.
Meanwhile, Gurdaspur cops said that they initiated a probe into the matter and an investigation is underway.
