Puducherry village's initiative to minimise use of plastic

Green initiative in Pillaiyarkuppam village of Puducherry is a model in the fight against the use of single-use plastic. This initiative of Pillaiyarkuppam villagers has also contributed greatly in making the region a popular tourist destination.

Puducherry:Taking a step forward in building a cleaner environment, a village in Puducherry began an initiative to minimise the use of plastic. Residents of Pillaiyarkuppam village formed a group of village councillors and members on behalf of the Puducherry environmental department.

Members of this group were trained to produce bags made of cloth and paper which helps in eliminating the single-use plastic. The cloth and paper bags were distributed to local shops and grocery stores. This move was greatly appreciated by people everywhere.

According to Puducherry Government Environmental Engineer Suresh, “Pillaiyarkuppam village was declared as a plastic-free village in 2010 and presently, we are creating awareness among people to use cloth and paper bags instead of plastic bags in grocery stores and tea shops. Local women and youngsters were given proper training for the production of alternatives of single-use plastic. As of now, this village is free of plastic.”

This initiative of Pillaiyarkuppam villagers has also contributed greatly in making the region a popular tourist destination.
