Pregnant lady assaulted by cops, dies

The death of a woman has triggered tension in Nokhuti of Karbi Anglong district in Assam. The villagers alleged that the woman was "assaulted" during the eviction drive in the district. The deceased, identified as Kulsuma Begum, delivered a baby after the assault.

Nakhuti: A pregnant lady died allegedly after being assaulted by cops in Nakhuti police station of Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday. The incident led to a protest where locals placed the deceased's body in front of the police station. The agitation led to a road blockade.

Kulsuma Begum was reportedly beaten by the police in the border areas of Karbi Anglong district, during an eviction drive on March 8.

She gave birth to a baby girl after the incident, following which her health condition worsened and she died on March 11.

The protesters have demanded for a compensation of ₹10 lakh and asked the government to take responsibility of the child.

To recall, the forest department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council had launched an eviction drive against the illegal settlers from the Lankaijan Reserve Forest. Over 600 "illegal structures" have been demolished so far.
