Meanwhile, his uncle Arshad Imam claimed that Sharjeel has not passed any derogatory remark and he should not be arrested.

"We have the right to live in India and we are Hindustani. We will remain in India and keep fighting for our rights," Arshad Imam said during interrogation.

Earlier, Union Minister Giriraj Singh in his tweet in Hindi declared Sharjeel as a traitor and said, 'He (Sharjeel) said that everyone's blood is mixed in the soil of this nation... and nobody owns this land. Hearing these traitors, how can I assume that their blood is mixed in the soil of India? He says that we will cut Assam out of India.'

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sambit Patra also claimed that people are conspiring to divide India in the name of protest at Shaheen Bagh. He also stated that people are involved in the act of arson and Jihad to separate Assam from India.

Amid the ongoing protests in Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, Assam Police has registered a case of treason against JNU student Sharjeel Imam. The case has been filed after a video of Sharjeel talking about cutting North-East India from the rest of India went viral on social media.

Complaints of treason have been filed against Sharjeel at three places so far including Uttar Pradesh.

"Another case has been registered in Aligarh against Sharjeel during the protests at Aligarh Muslim University on January 16 where he gave anti-national statements," Aligarh SSP said.
