Police not enforcing laws due to 'political pressure'

The case pertaining to pending criminal cases against the MPs and MLAs, the Supreme court took note of a submission which said that police does not enforce laws sometimes because of pressure from legislators.

New Delhi: While hearing a case pertaining to pending criminal cases against the MPs and MLAs, the Supreme court took note of a submission which said that police do not enforce laws sometimes because of pressure from legislators.

The bench led by Justice NV Ramana was hearing a petition filed by Advocate and BJP member Ashwini Upadhya who sought lifetime ban on politicians from either holding any office in a party or forming their own party.

In response to the plea, the court had directed all the High Courts to submit the details regarding pending criminal cases.

It was informed to the court that the total number of cases pending against the MPs and MLAs amount to 4,859 as per the latest reports. Uttar Pradesh has the maximum cases amounting to 1374 followed by Bihar with 557 and Odisha with 445. Nagaland, Sikkim, Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have 0 cases pending against the leaders. As per the last report submitted, there were 4442 cases.

The apex court said that they will adjourn the matter for 10 days so that the High courts also give recommendations and action plan so that it can be sent to the concerned Ministries.
