Police custody of Kashmiri couple held for IS links extended

The police custody of Kashmiri couple, who was arrested earlier this month for allegedly promoting the Islamic State's ideology and instigating protests against the citizenship act has been extended by seven days by Delhi court on Tuesday.

New Delhi:A Delhi court on Tuesday extended by seven days the police custody of a Kashmiri couple and another accused who were arrested for allegedly having links with Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) and were reportedly planning a terror attack in the country.

The couple, Jahanzaib Sami and Hina Bashir Beg, were arrested earlier this month for allegedly promoting the Islamic State's ideology and instigating protests against the citizenship act.

Another accused named Abdul Basith was, however, arrested earlier on Tuesday for involvement with the duo.

"Accused persons including Abdul Basith are actively following the ideology of ISIS and planning for terror strike in India and also recruiting cadres for ISKP," police mentioned in the remand copy submitted before the court.

The trio was produced before Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana on Tuesday.

Basith was already lodged in jail in a case being probed by the NIA and from there he was in contact with Jahanzaib through a social media application.

"Till now from the interrogation of accused persons as well as analysis of data received, it has been found that accused Abdul Basith is using a mobile phone in jail and is in contact with Jahanzaib Sami through Telegram," the remand copy added.

It added, "In one audio message Abdul Basith said to Jahanzaib to motivate and prepare some guys who may be used for lone wolf attack and kill the people through a truck or lorry by running them over on people."

The police said that the trio was in contact with Abu Ushman al Kashmiri, who is the head of Indian affairs of ISKP.
