POCSO debate: O'Brien reveals he was sexually abused as a 13-yr-old

Recalling his horrific experience of being sexually abused as a 13-year-old during the debate on the POCSO Amendment Bill, TMC MP Derek O'Brien urged others to come out with their stories as well.

New Delhi: Addressing the Rajya Sabha during the debate on the POCSO Amendment Bill, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien said that he was sexually abused at the age of 13.

Saying that sexual abuse starts at homes, O'Brien urged people to speak about their experience if they were sexually abused as children.

"On a bus in Kolkata, as a 13 year old, I was sexually molested," he described.

"I did not speak about it for many years," he added.

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was introduced in Rajya Sabha by the Minister of Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani earlier on July 18.

The Bill amends the POCSO Act, which seeks to protect children from offences such as sexual assault, sexual harassment, and pornography.
