PM Modi to visit Bhutan on August 17

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bhutan on 17-18 August to underline his government’s emphasis on India’s “Neighborhood-First" policy. In his first tenure also, PM Modi chose strategically important Bhutan as the first country for his foreign visit.

New Delhi: Stressing on his government's 'Neighbourhood-First' policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bhutan on August 17-18.

This will be his second official visit to Bhutan since assuming office in 2014.

In his first tenure, PM Modi chose the strategically important Bhutan as the first country for his foreign visit.

After winning the 2019 elections, Modi invited leaders of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, a South and Southeast Asian economic grouping, for his swearing-in on 30 May.

Bhutan's Prime Minister Lotay Tshering was one of those who attended the event in New Delhi.

Not only this, even External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar took his first official visit to Bhutan after assuming office.

It is important to note that PM Modi's trip will be the first since the China-India military face-off in 2017, triggered by an intrusion by Chinese troops into territory claimed by Bhutan.

According to an interview given by Bhutanese PM Dr Lotay Tshering to an English daily, both countries are going to sign four MoUs during PM Modi's upcoming visit.
