PM Modi in Bhutan; Defence, hydropower on the agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Bhutan starting today. During the visit, the Prime Minister is expected to receive audiences with the King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and hold delegation level talks on wide range of issues including Defence.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Bhutan as his two-day bilateral visit begins with hydropower project, Defence ties and Educational exchanges on the agenda.

He was received by Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering on his arrival at Paro International Airport. During the visit, the Prime Minister is expected to receive audiences with the King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King of Bhutan and hold talks with the Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering.

India and Bhutan share a special and time-tested partnership, anchored in mutual understanding and respect and reinforced by a shared cultural heritage and strong people to people links.

The visit is in keeping with the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries and provides an opportunity to the two sides to discuss ways to further strengthen and diversify the bilateral partnership, including economic and development co-operation, hydro-power co-operation, people-to-people-ties as well as shared views on regional matters and other issues of mutual interest.

In his pre-departure address, PM Modi had claimed that the bilateral visit reflects the high importance attached to strong relations with 'trusted friend and neighbour.'

PM is also set to address students at the prestigious Royal University of Bhutan.

India and Bhutan are also expected to sign 10 Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) during the bilateral meet.
