Plea challenging PM Modi's election to be heard by SC

The Supreme Court will hear the petition filed by BSF Jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav who had challenged the Varanasi elections of 2019 won by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday. Yadav approached the Apex court after his petition was dismissed by the Allahabad High Court earlier.

New Delhi:The Supreme Court bench led by the Chief Justice Of India, SA Bobde, will hear a petition filed by BSF Jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav who had challenged the Varanasi elections of 2019 in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had won, on May 22.

Earlier the petition was dismissed by the Allahabad High Court after which Yadav moved to the apex court challenging the order. The HC said that he was not an election candidate and therefore could not challenge the election of a successful candidate.

Yadav also wanted to contest the elections on Samajwadi seat but since his nomination papers were rejected by the returning officer on non-provision of a certificate regarding his dismissal from BSF, he wasn't allowed to contest. Alleging that the rejection was baseless, Yadav moved to the court seeking to declare PM Modi's election null and void.
